Regenerative medicine

The Jordan-Young Institute now offers the latest in regenerative medicine treatments for select spinal disorders, joint problems, and soft-tissue injuries. You may have heard about stem cells, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and other regenerative medicine treatments. Our physicians are both researchers and leaders in this area, who can help you separate fact from fiction in a field where often hype and hope dominate over science.

We practice the responsible use of these innovative treatments and will help navigate you through the confusion, controversy, and science surrounding these novel therapies.

Regenerative medicine may be appropriate for patients suffering with:

  • Knee arthritis
  • Tennis elbow
  • Jumpers knee (patellar tendinosis)
  • Hip bursitis associated with a tendinopathy
  • Certain types of spinal conditions

Regenerative medicine is an emerging and evolving field of medicine that seeks to alleviate symptoms associated with painful musculoskeletal conditions as well as potentially repair tissue damaged by way of degenerative conditions, disease, or injury.

Regenerative medicine utilizes one’s own cells or growth factors in order to amplify the body’s healing response or reduce
inflammation and pain.

Come explore your options!

Let our physicians provide you with the latest science to determine if these treatments may help with your back or joint pain.

All procedures are performed in our office and usually take about 30 minutes. A small amount of blood or bone marrow from your own body is processed through a centrifuge device to concentrate the biologic healing elements. The treatment itself is performed with a local anesthetic (numbing medication) under an ultrasound or x-ray (fluoroscope). The painful structure is then directly injected with the regenerative solution.

Intradiscal Bone Marrow Concentrate Injection

Bone marrow concentrate, or BMC, is a procedure in which we use your own bone marrow to treat a painful condition. A small amount of bone marrow is taken from the pelvis and then minimally processed in a centrifuge. The BMC contains growth factors and stem cells which promote healing of injured or degenerated tissue. We then inject your own BMC back into the specific area causing your pain. Studies have shown that this type of treatment may help alleviate some types of pain.

Platelet Rich Plasma

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) uses naturally occurring growth factor in your own blood to promote healing. In this process we take a small amount of your blood, about the same as a typical blood draw for routine labs, spin it down in a centrifuge, and use only a small portion constraining a very high concentration of platelets and growth factors for the injection.

Stem Cells

You may have heard about stem cell treatments for all sorts of medical conditions. We are here to help you sort through what is fact vs. fiction. There is definitely a lot of hype, but some of the treatments do appear promising.

Regenerative Medicine Study

The regenerative medicine team at Jordan-Young including David Levi ,MD, Scott Horn, DO and Sara Tyszko, PA are leaders in the field of regenerative medicine. They published the first high quality research on a new treatment for discogenic lower back pain, platelet-rich plasma. The results have been presented at numerous international spine meetings By Dr. Levi and Dr. Horn. The results were published in the prestigious journal Pain Medicine.

Your Regenerative Medicine Team

Led by Dr. David Levi and Dr. Scott Horn, Jordan-Young Institute is excited to offer cutting-edge regenerative medicine treatments for joint and spine conditions. Dr.’s Levi and Horn are leaders in the field of regenerative medicine and lecture extensively on the topic at national meetings.
