Kevin F. Bonner, MD, FAAOS, FAANA.

Orthopedic Surgeon

At the Jordan-Young Institute, Dr. Kevin Bonner primarily specializes in the treatment of injuries and disorders involving the shoulder and knee.  He focuses on the least invasive cutting-edge treatment strategies that are based on the latest scientific evidence available. Prior to joining the Jordan-Young Institute, Dr. Bonner served as an Orthopedic Surgeon for the US Navy. He was Chief of Sports Medicine at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, as well as Orthopedic Surgeon for the US Navy SEALs, prior to leaving the Navy in 2002 to join the Jordan-Young Institute.

In addition to serving as the Chairman of the Education Committee for the Arthroscopy Association of North America, Dr. Bonner has recently been named Fellow of the Arthroscopy Association of North America (FAANA). Dr. Bonner is one of only a few Fellows of AANA in Virginia. Serving and teaching as chairman, program director or expert faculty for many academic national and international orthopedic conferences has allowed him to evaluate the latest techniques and devices that are being developed throughout the world at their earliest stages. In fact, Dr. Bonner has helped develop some of the techniques and procedures currently used today in the United States. He also serves on national expert panels to optimize surgical proficiency for surgeons learning sports-related and arthroscopic procedures including arthroscopic rotator cuff repair and ACL reconstruction.

Dr. Bonner has a combination of extensive experience and success with the drive to never be complacent and to always strive to improve. According to Dr. Bonner, inherent to the privilege of practicing medicine is the incessant challenge to acquire and synthesize ever-expanding information and evidence. An integral responsibility of being a physician and a surgeon is staying at the top of your game, whether in the office or the operating room setting. He also believes you truly need to treat your patients like they are family and friends.

Dr. Bonner is principally focused on the treatment of problems prior to joint replacement surgery in the shoulder and knee.  Whether it’s an injury to an elite athlete or an older individual who simply cannot get a good night’s sleep due to a rotator cuff tear, patients can be confident that they will be treated with the most modern, verified techniques. He is at the forefront of research and information related to achieving an optimal outcome.  He has written numerous articles, medical textbook chapters and lectures on topics including arthroscopic shoulder surgery, arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, meniscus repair & transplantation, articular cartilage treatment & repair, osteochondral transplantation, ligament reconstruction of the knee, and stem cells and other biologic treatments. He stresses that vetting new procedures based on scientific methodology and not commercial hype is an important component to his responsibility as a physician.

Dr. Bonner takes care of many of the region’s elite athletes from high school through the professional level. In addition, professional athletes from the National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), as well as college athletes, now travel to Virginia Beach to obtain consults, care and surgery with Dr. Bonner. In fact, patients also travel from foreign countries to undergo shoulder and knee surgery with him.

Dr. Bonner is the Head Team Orthopedic Surgeon for the Old Dominion University Women's Soccer team, Men's Baseball team and Women's Basketball team. He is honored to provide quality care to these local NCAA Division I athletes.

Dr. Bonner is assisted by Abby Hoobler, PA-C, Neil Harrison, PA-C, and Allison Hetrick, ATC, OTC.

Dr. Bonner lives in Virginia Beach with his wife and children.
