Justin W. Griffin, MD, FAAOS Orthopedic Surgeon

Dr. Justin Griffin, a native of Virginia Beach, is fellowship-trained shoulder and sports medicine specialist serving the greater Hampton Roads area and surrounding communities. Offering both surgical and nonsurgical treatments, Dr. Griffin’s practice utilizes a combination of approaches designed for each patient with an emphasis on restorative procedures and joint preserving techniques that are alternatives to conventional replacements for active patients. Minimally-invasive, state-of-the-art, arthroscopic techniques are used to accelerate the recovery process for challenging conditions. Dr. Griffin has advanced arthroscopy training and is able to perform the vast majority of shoulder procedures in a minimally invasive fashion, including all types of rotator cuff repairs and instability repair. These techniques allow him to repair tears that some consider “irreparable.” In addition, he performs anatomic and reverse shoulder replacements for shoulder arthritis. Dr. Griffin regularly teaches medical students and remains active in lecturing throughout the region and nation. He has published over 100 articles, books chapters and presentations. Dr. Griffin is the only elected member of the prestigious American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) in Hampton Roads, which has only seven hundred worldwide members.
Prior to joining the Jordan-Young Institute, Dr. Griffin assisted in caring for the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Bulls, DePaul University, University of Virginia and James Madison University athletes. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Griffin is actively involved in research. Dr. Griffin and his research team are conducting ongoing evaluation of the effects of superior capsular reconstruction, overhead athletes and biologic interventions in the shoulder and sports medicine. One of his major focuses is on improving and measuring outcomes. He is interested in reducing complications after surgery. He is actively involved in research to develop and perfect new treatment strategies to allow for faster and more complete recovery. More recent research interests include the application of biologic therapies such as the use of growth factors and stem cells to augment healing. Dr. Griffin is actively involved in giving lectures on various shoulder and sports medicine topics and is elected to multiple committees on which he currently serves to advance his specialty.
Dr. Griffin graduated first in his medical school class, Summa Cum Laude from Loyola University Chicago’s Stritch School of Medicine with Honors in research and was selected into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) national honor medical society and Alpha Sigma Nu Honor Society. Dr. Griffin then went on to complete his orthopedic surgery training at the University of Virginia where he was selected as resident of the year and chief administrative resident. During his time in Charlottesville, Dr. Griffin received numerous teaching awards including the Gold Humanism and excellence in teaching award and was selected into the Mulholland Society for his educational aptitude, which he now applies to his patient interactions and teaching medical students. He was then selected to receive advanced specialized training in comprehensive shoulder surgery and sports medicine completing the internationally acclaimed fellowship at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago with many of the nation’s leading experts. Following this fellowship, Dr. Griffin spent additional time with surgeons at the Mayo Clinic studying advance shoulder surgery. During his time in Chicago, he served as faculty at several courses focused on advanced techniques for Shoulder and Arthroscopic Surgery.
Compassionate Patient Care An advocate for education, research and patient care, Dr. Griffin is dedicated to helping his patients no matter if they are a professional athlete, weekend warrior or have a desire to get back to activities to remain healthy and active. Dr. Griffin and his team recognize the impact an injury or painful joint can have on all aspects of a patient’s life and well-being. Their team approach is first and foremost to provide the highest level of clinical care to maximize outcome and recovery. In addition, they feel that patient education to facilitate shared decision-making based on the latest evidence is critical to achieving a successful outcome. Dr. Griffin and his office staff strive to provide a warm, welcoming, supportive and efficient patient experience.
Dr. Griffin is assisted by Travis Farrell, PA-C.

Dr. Griffin was very informed and gave me the information I was seeking about my ongoing shoulder pain. I have been seeing him for around 2 years and we exhausted every avenue before getting surgery, which is now needed for my rotator cuff. I always do alot of research about doctors before seeing them and can honestly say Dr. Griffin is one of the very best and trust him to do my shoulder surgery as one of the best in his field in the 757 area.

Excellent bedside manner and very professional. I brought my mom to him after I started going for severe arthritis in my shoulder. She also suffered from the same. He replaced her shoulder more than a year ago and I’m very happy to say she had no problems and is back in her garden digging to her hearts delight! I’m next, just not ready quite yet. For now the injections he gives me are keeping me pain free and I’m able to do almost anything I want.

Wow. Dr. Griffin did my reverse shoulder replacement surgery and I could not be happier with the results. His overall level of medical skill is complemented by his excellent patient communication & positive approach. I would also like to give a special shout out to his amazing staff, including Travis and Alexis, who helped make my overall journey a success as well.)I decided to use Jordan-Young’s physical therapy services and had an equally amazing experience with therapist Will Norris. Hands down, he was instrumental in my recovery. It takes a team to make any surgery successful. So if you need shoulder surgery, you will find no better than Dr Justin Griffin, his staff, and J-Y’s post-operative PT services.

Dr. Griffin was amazing. He listened to my concerns, did a few tests (he was very gentle) and went over my results so I understood them. He detailed his recommendations and gave me a shot to relieve the pain, all in one visit. I will definitely be going back to him. So glad I found him! My pain went from a 7 to a 1 in just 20 minutes.

Dr. Griffin was wonderful with our 17 year old son. He came in the room smiling and treated him as a young athlete as well as a young adult. Did his exam went over X-rays and found out what we needed to do next and are moving forward. His team as well as all the staff at Jordan Young were and always are very nice and helpful. All of my have always felt welcome in coming. If you are looking for doctors that listen, care and come up with a plan I highly recommend coming here. Also Dr. Griffin did surgery on my dad’s shoulder 6/8 years ago and it has been close to perfect ever since. This is why we initially started coming to this team of doctors! I don’t think you can go wrong with any of them.

I came to Dr. Griffin with tears in the supraspinatus, subscapularis, and long head biceps tendon, plus a dislocation to the biceps tendon, a labrum tear, and some scarring. Long story, short: I was experiencing moderate pain but with a significant loss of function, particularly for contact and combat sports. Dr. Griffin was able to see me quickly, and he and the staff at Jordan Young were pleasant, professional, and efficient. After getting an MRI, I was able to go to surgery a few weeks later, and my post-surgical course was quite remarkable - remarkable because I had very little pain, even during physical therapy. I was prepared for much more discomfort and disability but was pleasantly surprised at how well I felt (the first two days after surgery were painful, but almost nothing since then). I followed instructions and guidance faithfully and have had a great recovery. I am about 5 months post-surgery and am nearly back to 100%. Dr. Griffin has my highest recommendation.

Easy check in and very nice employees! Dr Griffin makes you feel very welcome to this practice. He is by far the kindest, most informative surgeon, and takes the time needed to feel comfortable. He is exceptionally smart and took the time to explain the possibilities of helping me. He explained the reverse shoulder replacement surgery like no other surgeon I have met. I am so grateful that my plastic surgeon, Dr Weiss, recommended Jordan Young and Dr. Griffin!

I was very impressed with Dr. Griffin. He again appeared to be caring and he took his time through MRI explanation and also using a shoulder model to explain exactly what was going on and how to solve the problem. Dr. Griffin and his team are amazing. The team (MD, PA, MA's) is knowledgeable, personable, empathetic, efficient in their delivery of care. I sustained a devastating (to me) right shoulder injury from a clumsy fall in May of 2024. I had pain and weakness that prevented me from enjoying my favorite sports all summer, those being hiking, biking, kayaking and surfing. I felt my summer and rest of the year were ruined. I fought with the insurance company to obtain an MRI so I could know exactly what was going on with the shoulder. Finally I had one in September, and then was referred to Dr. Griffin. He explained all components of the MRI and answered all my questions. He reassured me that the surgery would fix the large rotator cuff tendon tears and that it could be done arthroscopically, avoiding a big incision. I really needed to return to work after 3 months, and he said that was possible. No one was dismissive at Jordan Young and all my concerns were addressed. Fourteen weeks postop now, and I feel that with PT which I now have to do at home, I will be surfing and kayaking this spring. I recommend Dr. Griffin to anyone with shoulder issues, whether the issue is non surgical or surgical.

Saw Dr Justin Griffin for the first time yesterday, 12/4/2024. Problem was pain, loss of strength and mobility of shoulder following previous shoulder replacement 22 months prior by another surgeon. Dr Griffin was recommended to me by my PCP and Cardiologist. I was delighted by the automated quick and efficient check-in process, the very friendly, caring, and efficient staff. The facilities were clean, comfortable and modern. Dr. Griffin was a breath of fresh air. He was caring and took the necessary time to show and explain the problem revealed by the x rays. He was quick to explain the path forward to resolution of my shoulder problem. Also the scripts for blood testing and a scan were called in before we left his office. Dr. Griffin and the administrative people and facilities surrounding his practice are the best I have ever experienced. I highly recommend you make an appointment with Dr Griffin for your orthopedic problems.

Dr Griffin is absolutely the best! He replaced both of my mother’s shoulders and a close friend and he is one of the best Dr’s I’ve ever dealt with so it was a no-brainer when I needed to be seen for what I thought was rotator cuff issues. Turns out it’s my neck. After previous X-ray and MRI, Dr. Griffin did his own and saw the problem right away and is referring me to a neck specialist. He is best around so why go anywhere else?

Dr. Griffin’s expertise and professionalism were evident from the first consultation through to the post-surgery follow-ups. He thoroughly explained the procedure, answered all my questions, and made sure I felt comfortable every step of the way. The surgery went exceptionally well, and the results are outstanding. The incision is so well-healed that it’s almost invisible, which speaks volumes about Dr. Griffin's skill and attention to detail. The team at the Jordan Young Institute is also top-notch—everyone I interacted with was professional, helpful, and genuinely caring. I am extremely grateful for Dr. Griffin and the entire staff at the Jordan Young Institute for their exceptional care. I highly recommend Dr. Griffin to anyone in need of an orthopedic surgeon.

He explained the x-ray to me in detail as well. I was given treatment and a prescription for PT along with a follow up date. I was very pleased with the time spent and the outcome. Dr. Griffin was very kind and thorough. He took enough time to address all of my questions and concerns. He provided models of the area we were there to discuss and explained how the surgery would be done, how the new configuration works, the recovery rate, what expected ranges of motion with PT could be and the success rate of the surgery, along with other tests that would be carried out before, during and after surgery. I left with a clear understanding of what to expect going forward. Overall I was very satisfied with the consultation.

Dr. Griffin was very friendly and expressed my concern for decreased ability activities that I enjoy. That I greatly appreciated. He and his staff, though busy, seemed to listen to me and wanted to help. I wish more physicians listened to patients that way. As a Physical Therapist myself I feel he wants to collaborate with me with treatment strategies and not just tell me what I need to do or what my options are. My husband is 89 and his knees have been hurting him every day. He was not one to have pain before. Now has Parkinsons. Dr. Griffin took an Xray and that showed us lots of arthritis. He gave him a shot in each knee. So far that shot has been helping. We hope and pray it will continue! I will continue to recommend Dr. Griffin to my friends!

Dr Griffin worked on both of my shoulders. The right one I was told by another Orthopedic surgeon I would need a replacement . Second opinion was from Griffin and he advised that would be his last choice but wasn’t sure he could fully repair it but an option to graft a buffer may be better for me. I choose this option and thankful I did that shoulder is extremely strong and no pain just followed the directions and Physical Therapy. Second shoulder was different but extreme complete tear. He was able to bring it all back together and today I was released after 5 months to resume my normal lifestyle. No CrossFit right away but I have no pain and almost back to strength. Dr Griffin and his team are very attentive and caring. If it takes a while to get in to see them or for him to get to the office it’s worth it. The treatment helped but it was very apparent to Dr Griffin that I needed surgery. He explained the causes of the pain I was having, and how the surgery would correct the multiple problems in my arm and shoulder that were causing the discomfort. The surgery was successful and the post-surgery therapy helped me to regain full motion in my shoulder and arm. Dr Griffin took great interest in making sure that I was well on the road to recovery. Dr Griffin and team are the best! Professional with genuine interest in your symptoms and how it all happened. Surgically awesome results, and my preferred surgeon to fix my ortho/tendon work as many friends in my circle do not have the success I enjoy without any limitations or briefed risks (i.e., same surgeries, I don’t have their issues/numbness). Physical Therapy and follow up with Dr Griffin and his team (PA Neil Harrison) is also excellent. Highest recommendation for total orthopedic care experts!

I was a surgical patient of Dr. Justin W. Griffin for Total Left Shoulder Replacement Surgery in late August 2020 due to the total deterioration of that joint that led to the loss of strength, compromised Range of Motion (ROM) and constant pain (8 out of 10 range). I had gone through a Total Right Shoulder Joint Replacement Surgery in 2009 wherein a long stem shaft was inserted into my humerus. Surgery was successful but REHAB was excruciatingly painful. I had a KINEX passive resistance machine ordered to assist during the REHAB. Took almost one year for pain to finally subside and ROM & strength to return. My pre-surgical briefing w/ Dr. Griffin revealed a new STEMLESS procedure for Total Shoulder Joint Replacement. Instead of a long shaft insertion, the diseased portion of the humerus process would be cleanly removed and a flat plate placed with an open threaded portal that would receive a threaded ball exactly placed, to act as the pivoting axis point for the new shoulder joint. Surgery was completely successful and I began REHAB without the need for a KINEX machine. Post surgery pain was considerably less than my previous 2009 surgery. I was back to full ROM within FOUR (4) months; pain was at a (3) level and full strength was achieved by the SIX (6) month mark. I just completed my one year follow-up w/ Dr. Griffin and I passed all ROM, pain and strength evaluations. It is no problem for me to whirl my left arm around to the front and back without restriction or pain. It is a windmill motion both backwards and forwards that is not impinged in any way. The STEMLESS JOINT REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE is a huge advancement from the long stem humerus insertion procedure I endured in 2009. In fact my left shoulder joint is currently stronger than my right shoulder joint. The Stemless Shoulder Joint Replacement Surgery is a great total shoulder joint replacement development that Dr. Griffin performed flawlessly. This procedure has allowed me at 76 years of age, to continue my workouts that include swimming, stretching, boxing, martial arts and weights. Thank you Dr. Griffin and my thanks to your staff for their continued flexibility, thoroughness and compassion to include pre and post surgical care. The BEST.>>

Recently I was experiencing left knee pain that was severely impacting my quality of life. Not one to quickly jump into surgery I went to a Physical Therapist for 4-5 months trying to resolve the issue. While the PT went well and my strength increased the knee pain did not subside. Dr Griffin was recommended by the PT team and they assisted me in quickly setting up an appointment. Dr Griffin’s team was great from the start and took the time to answer all of my questions. The information passing between the PT and DR Griffin was smooth and was a big help in evaluating the options. While I was hesitant to have surgery they really helped evaluate what was the best course of action for me and did an incredible job both pre op and post op. I couldn’t recommend a better team to help with my surgery and recovery.

Dr Justin Griffin and his staff are absolutely wonderful. I received a full “reverse” shoulder replacement six months ago (Oct 2021) and the result is astounding! I am so glad I met Dr Griffin and spoke with him about my shoulders. The level of concern and care I experienced from Dr Griffin, his Ortho PA Travis McLaughlin, and all the rest of the staff at Jordan-Young has been so very reassuring and really gave me the confidence to go ahead with this very necessary surgery. I was in so much pain and had little range of motion. My arthritis and rotator cuff deterioration were making it difficult for me to do many common tasks of daily living, and impossible to do even slightly more strenuous activities like brushing my dogs, or taking them on walks on their leashes. I could only drive for short periods and I could not lie down on either shoulder. Dr Griffin operated on my shoulder at the Leigh Orthopedic Surgical Center and I was home the same day. It was an amazing experience that quickly got even better when I realized I had no pain in my new left shoulder! Even the Physical Therapy was a breeze! Already my life is changed for so much better; I can actually do some much needed yard work, and have returned to my hobbies of painting and crafting. I have absolute confidence in Dr Griffin, and his team, and have scheduled surgery on my right shoulder for the near future. I highly recommend Dr Justin Griffin at Jordan-Young Institute!

I have been having knee issues for the past 7 years and went to multiple doctors that left me disappointed and continued to deal with the pain and symptoms constantly. I have a very physically demanding job and I needed medical help to maintain my career. I went to Dr. Griffin for another opinion, and he suggested a surgical procedure to clean out my knee joint and reduce the swelling and scar tissue that had built up over time. It has been 4 months since my procedure, and I have been pain-free and back to being able to perform at work and in training. I am back into a weightlifting regimen for strengthening my legs and it feels so amazing to be able to squat and kneel without any symptoms. Dr. Griffin and his staff not only did an excellent job with my procedure, but they were very thorough and had great bedside manner at every appointment I attended. I highly recommend Dr. Griffin to everyone and will return to him without hesitation if I have a future need.

I recently had total shoulder replacement surgery. The procedure was done by Dr. Justin Griffin and his team. Everything went flawlessly. I woke to minimal pain and have experienced very little discomfort since. For me the difference between before and after could not be more dramatic. I was in constant pain and often needed help to do simple routine tasks. Following surgery I have not required any pain medication including over the counter remedies. I followed the recovery routine laid out by Dr. Griffin and his staff and within days had more mobility with less pain than I had experienced in years. I am about two months out from my surgery and am close to 100% use of my shoulder. I attribute my outsatnding result to having an exceptional surgeon in Dr. Griffin.

I want to start out saying I’m a very active person in the outdoors with sports that abuse your body and have paid the price for it over the years. I’ve had multiple previous surgeries from different physicians on my shoulders and arms for torn rotator cuffs and bicep tendons from the age of 21-51 and I was in constant pain with my quality of life diminished substantially from arthritis and. I knew that my only option for long-term pain relief was a shoulder replacement, so I sought out to find the best surgeon for this task in the Hampton Roads area and that is Dr. Justin Griffin. So, in 2021 I elected to have the surgery for a total shoulder replacement and couldn’t be happier with the results. My surgery and recovery were difficult due to the Bristow procedure being done on that shoulder when I was 21 but every day I get a little bit stronger and when I turn 55 in a little over a year, I’m shooting to be in the best shape of my life. Thank You Dr. Griffin and staff!

After experiencing serious shoulder pain for about 3 months I finally got help and was referred to Dr. Griffin. What a lovely person. My pain level out of a 1-10 scale was at least a 15 pretty much constantly. After a thorough examination, he suggested we start with a steroid injection. Within hours my pain was maybe a 2. That was a month ago and I am still mostly pain free. There ARE options other than surgery and Dr. Griffin will explore those first, thankfully. He is such a nice nice nice person and an exceptional surgeon ( family experience). I love that he considers ALL the options not just jumping in on surgery.

Always a delight to have an appointment with Dr. Griffin. He is personable, professional, and takes the time to discuss in detail all the facts of your condition and treatment options. I also appreciate his sensitivity to the patient's time. How often does one hear "the doctor is running behind" causing one to wait an hour or more for a 'scheduled' appointment? I called one day, was scheduled for the next day (thank you Hannah), was in a treatment room within 10 minutes, and seen by Dr. Griffin in no longer that 5-8 minutes. Patients really appreciate that consideration. Exceptions can occur of course but they should certainly not be the norm. Lastly, I have encountered friends who are patients of Dr. Griffin. They to provide positive feedback on their "Doctor/patient" relationship with him. So, thanks to Dr. Griffin and his team of professionals. I could see from my X-ray that there was no narrowing of the joint space, and told them that I wanted to “think about it”. I made a appointment with Dr. Justin Griffin at Jordan Young, and, after a thorough exam, Dr. Griffin said that he didn’t think my pain was totally in my shoulder, that it was coming from my neck. July of 2020 Dr. Griffin repaired my left shoulder utilizing the "Arthroscopic" method The two methods are as different as Night and Day. I felt so much better in just one week after the procedure. Of course Physical Therapy was needed. Dr. Griffin, Travis and their Staff called and checked on my progress often. Never take surgery lightly, but I'm elated with the results now 7 months later. Thanks Dr. Griffin and Travis.

Dr. Griffin replaced my shoulder in July, 2020. My first visit was virtual where he answered all of my questions and was prepared for the visit by reviewing my X-rays and MRI. The shoulder joint replacement has been very successful. Six months post-op, I am able to use the shoulder for completing most of the tasks needed for life. The Jordan-Young Group has very competent physicians and support staff. My experience with Dr. Griffin replacing my shoulder, Dr Bonner replacing both knees over 15 years ago and Dr. Midis assisting me with an ankle injury has been extremely positive. With the experience and expertise in their individual specialty, these physicians have greatly improved my quality of life.

Dr. Griffin has given me my life without pain back. I went to him in May 2020 with severe shoulder pain. He wanted to try the conservative route. He gave me a cortisone shot and I did physical therapy for 6 weeks. The pain did not get any better. At my follow up visit with Dr. Griffin, we discussed having an MRI. The MRI showed various issues in the shoulder. Dr. Griffin performed surgery on July 21, 2020. After 12 weeks of PT, I have regained my ability to live life as normal without the constant pain. I would recommend Dr. Griffin to anyone in need of a fantastic shoulder surgeon. He made me feel comfortable from the initial meeting through the 20 week post-op visit I had with him in December.

I am a Captain in the Virginia Beach Fire Department and wore both of my shoulders out. I needed badly to replace both of them. Dr. Griffin and his office at the Jordan Young Institute did a totally magnificent job. My first shoulder was done August 19, 2020 and was an anatomical replacement. The second was done November 20, 2020 and was a reverse shoulder replacement. Dr. Griffin did a tremendous job on both of them. I only wish I had done them sooner. His office staff were the best I have ever encountered. I can now do things with my shoulders that I could only dream about before the operation. Dr. Griffin is talented, experienced and has given me the best outcome I could have possibly hoped for. If you need a shoulder replacement, this is the guy you want.

An MRI revealed a torn meniscus. Dr. Griffin examined my knee, read the MRI, and recommended surgery to repair the tear. The surgery went very well. I went to Dr. Griffin after a friend recommended him to me 09/2019. I had previously had three surgeries on my right shoulder by different Doctors with no improvement. The first one was a total replacement 04/2013. The pain was still unbearable after five years. I had Arthroscopic surgery 02/2018 to clean out scar tissue and Spurs. Still no improvement. I had total revision right shoulder Arthoplasty 10/2018. This was done putting a larger ball in the socket. This made matters worse. I had PT after each procedure. In Sept. 2019 I went to see Dr. Griffin. I had x rays and MRI and surgery for a Reverse Shoulder Replacement was scheduled for December 5. Since that surgery and the PT, I can do things with that arm that I have not done in years. I can reach over my head, I can cast a rod and reel, and I even trimmed a weeping willow tree with the hedge trimmers over my head. I would and have recommended Dr. Griffin to anyone. He did not have much to work with, but he sure fixed my shoulder. Dr. Justin Griffin, Travis Ferrel, and his staff are the best!!!! THANKS, JAMES ROSE

While stepping sideways during routine activity my knee made a loud and excruciating "pop" and I fell. A few days later I hobbled into Dr Griffin's office on a cane and feeling pain with each step. X-rays were done on site and an MRI was scheduled. I saw him 8 days after my initial visit to discuss the MRI and schedule surgery... or so I thought. He did not want to resort to surgery anymore than I wanted to undergo it -- that was shocking news and counter to my pre-conceived expectations. Physical Therapy was prescribed (I used Sentara on Volvo in Chesapeake) twice weekly along with exercises to do at home. When I saw Dr Griffin after six weeks of PT for an assessment the knee was strong and stable, range of motion had improved, and there was no pain. Surgery has been avoided. I am grateful for Dr Griffin's expertise and attentive listening.

Dr. J. W. Griffin was recommended by friends that have used Jordan Young Institute. I had shoulder pain for almost 8 months and two other doctors told me it was caused by neck issues and they treated me for that. With no relief, I contacted Dr. Griffins office, set appointment, got consolation and was sent to get MRI. Results showed a torn rotator cuff, a torn bicep muscle and a bone spur. Before the surgery Dr. Griffin and Travis Farrell his (PA-C) took the time to explain what he was going to do, what pain to expect and time required for complete recovery. At that time I was fitted with a sling I would have to wear for six weeks after surgery. Surgery was accomplished to correct these issues. Three months of physical Therapy at Jordan Young Rehab, (Michael LiVoti), a few follow-up appointments to check progress and healing. Shoulder healed great and movement without pain restored. I recommend Dr. Griffin and his staff for any orthopedic needs.

I had a gym accident where I tore my pec muscle. I went to a few other MD's before finding Dr. Griffin. When I called his office I left a message and they called me back right away saying the doctor needs to see you tomorrow. I went in and right away he explained to me what was wrong and walked me through the procedure and scheduled my surgery for four days later. He stressed that we could not wait or else the repair would be harder with scar tissue building. Other doctors told me that recovery would be 6 months. Dr. Griffin told me that I should be good to go after 4 months. Here it is four months to the day I am cleared and doing chest exercises again. He is very specific with his PT script and is well known in the field. The PT place that I went to had many of Dr. Giffin's patients and they said he is the best around. The whole time he answered any question. His staff and PA Travis were wonderful throughout the process. He took time to understand my lifestyle and job really cared about getting me back to work without rushing the process. I’m so happy that my Primary Care referred me to Dr. Griffin at Jordan Young for my shoulder care. With a partially torn rotator cuff and SLAP tear that led to Frozen Shoulder, I was afraid surgery was in my future. But Dr. Griffin believed we could get major improvement from PT and a cortisone shot. Previous doctors had been wary of giving me Cortisone as Type 1 Diabetic, but Dr. Griffin let me make that choice, and I chose the shot and WOW what a difference! Between the shot and the PT, my shoulder is so greatly improved 6 weeks later. It’s not back to my normal yet, but Dr. Griffin extended my PT prescription and it’s continuing to improve! I could not be happier unless maybe he had a magic wand. ;) I would recommend him highly to anyone in need of a doc that’s willing to listen and take steps to help you help yourself through PT, etc., before jumping to surgery.

Wish I could fit more here...Dr Griffin, his PA Travis, and the whole team are smooth and efficient, from preop to postop. My SIL who is 80 was in constant pain from a failed rotattor cuff repair, and he performed a REVERSE shoulder replacement, which immediately relieved her pain. As he does not cut the muscles, she awoke with only minimal incisional pain, and was able to go home the next day. The whole process of education, DME provision ahead of time and follow up at 2 wks and 6 wks is fabulous, and we never felt rushed. Dr Griffin was raised locally, went to Chicago for training, was team doc for the Cubs and Bulls, wrote papers and gave speeches and is apparently the local top-notch shoulder allstar. We are beyond thrilled at the very wonderful job done by this team of Dr Justin Griffin, PA Travis Farrell, and the Jordan Young Institute and the staff at SLH; she has done so well, Ruby wishes she had done this long ago! I cannot say enough positive things about Dr Justin Griffin, his PA Travis Farrell, and the entire office. The entire process of the Jordan-Young Institute is nearly flawless, flows well, with each member of the team introducing themselves and explaining their responsibilities. My 80 year old sister-in-law Ruby needed shoulder repair after an initial rotator cuff failure for other reasons, and she was thankfully referred to Dr Griffin, who is clearly the allstar in local shoulder surgery. He explained to her the plan was for a REVERSE shoulder replacement, which I had not encountered in my nursing career, but turned out to be the perfect solution. Her chronic shoulder suffering was immediately relieved following surgery, and her only discomfort was the skin stitches, totally managed by Tylenol. He is a pioneer and does NOT cut the muscles, and his staff fits the proper postoperative sling immobilizer prior to surgery, so patients arrive at Sentara Leigh prepared and educated with the right equipment, also having scrubbed with special soap. The orthopedic wing of Sentara Leigh was also awesome, knowing exactly how to manage his patients. She has had the most perfect recuperation, and we had non-rushed follow up visits at 2 weeks and 6 weeks, with Dr Griffin reviewing xrays with us, and he was as happy as we were. We were also happy to participate in a research study answering questions about our before and after improvement in shoulder pain. Dr Griffin has extensive training in shoulder surgery from Chicago, and was team doc for the Cubs and Bulls while there, but has returned to his hometown of Tidewater, and has a lot of publications and education. We are so very happy with Carolyn from research, Leticia and Tiffany from Durable Medical Equipment, as well as the allstars Dr Justin Griffin and PA Travis Farrell. We are so very pleased and would recommend them to ANYONE!!!

Dr. Griffin and his PA, Travis hit the mark! I originally saw Dr. Griffin for what turned out to be a Spontaneous Bicep tear which we agreed would be best managed conservatively. Just about 2 months after I experience severe trauma to my other shoulder. Unfortunately, the news was not good and it was found that I had a complete tear of my Rotator Cuff that required immediate surgery. Dr. Griffin's staff worked with me to get everything moving. This included pre-operative physical therapy as well as post-operative physical therapy. I was well educated on the expectations of the surgery as well as the long, somewhat arduous recovery period. I will admit that the pain after surgery was worse than the injury itself, it did resolve and I am totally pain-free and at my age of 67 I am enjoying a recovery of about 95 % on that shoulder. I would highly recommend Dr. Griffin and his staff for any of your orthopedic needs. He and his staff take the time to interact with their patients!

I had rotator cuff surgery done by Dr. Griffin in March. I also had a torn labrum. My recovery has been nothing short of amazing! I can truly say I had very minimal pain following the surgery. I'm 5 months out, and still doing PT. My range of motion is excellent! My strength is getting better every day. I am back to work light duty, anticipating going back full time, full duty in a couple of weeks. I am an x-ray tech, and my job requires a lot of lifting, pushing, pulling, and assisting patients during their exams. I am confident I will be able to do my job just as I did before my tear and surgery. Dr. Griffin and his entire staff, especially Travis Farrell, his PA are nothing shy of excellent, professional, caring an extremely competent. I would not have gone anywhere else for my shoulder surgery, and could not be happier with the outcome!

Dr Griffin performed a massive rotator cuff repair on my right shoulder. Before the operation I had constant pain, difficulty sleeping and had to give up tennis. After the operation and rehabilitation I was pain free and able to resume tennis. Dr Griffin is an outstanding surgeon and his follow up care after the surgery was superb. He was always informative and supportive throughout my recovery and this was reassuring and essential to my steady progress in recovering. He is a surgeon who genuinely cares about his patients and always takes time to fully engage during every patient visit. I would definitely see him again if I have any other shoulder problems and absolutely recommend him to anyone with shoulder problems.

Dr. Griffin is by far the most knowledgeable, professional, and personable doctor I have had treat me. I tore my rotator cuff and went to see him after hearing great reviews about the Jordan Young Institute. I read his bio and publications and knew he was an expert in his field. He was very thorough in his explanation of things and I never felt silly for asking a question. The surgery experience was the best it could be and he always texted or called back when I had a question after the surgery. He recommended an excellent physical therapist and I have almost full range of motion back after six months!! I can not say enough about Dr. Griffin and his excellent staff! Awesome experience- even if it was surgery!

After having shoulder pain for over a year I finally went to see Dr Griffin. After some xrays and consultation the course of treatment was exercises at home and (the best thing) I received a shot of a steroid. (Don't recall the proper name.) It was wonderful. The shoulder is now pain free and working properly. GREAT!

So thankful Dr. Justin Griffin was recommended to me. He was very concerned with my shoulder as it was almost to bad to repair. I can't say enough good things about Dr. Griffin & his Assistant Travis Farrell, P.A. They thoroughly explained everything & I never felt I was being rushed. I had what they called a "Reverse Shoulder Replacement". When I was going to my first visit I told my wife I didn't know what I would do if they said they couldn't help me. I was in so much pain. Since my surgery I am pain free. I highly recommend Dr. Justin Griffin.

I saw Dr Griffin for shoulder pain and loss of range of motion (ROM). He ordered X-Rays and a MRI to confirm the status of both the joint and muscles supporting the shoulder. After carefully reviewing the test results with me, he recommended a conservative course of treatment, with a steroid injection and physical therapy. After 6 weeks of PT, I have recovered almost my entire ROM and easily move the shoulder without pain. Dr Griffin and his team were great to work with and achieved the results I desired without surgery. I would definitely recommend Dr Griffin at the Jordan Young Institute and my Physical Therapists Anne Kelly and Shaun Scissom at Sentara Therapy Center Fort Norfolk. Their conservative approach and effective treatment allowed me to re-gain my ROM and return to normal activities.

Dr Griffin and Travis Ferrell have been extremely great to work with on making decisions on my right shoulder issues. Both took extra time explaining, showing and helping me make the right decisions on my issues that did lead to surgery. Due to caretaker duties of my parents it was important to try a clean out surgery first. That did not work and I had full shoulder replacement surgery. It could not of gone better. No more pain, and they have been extremely patient with all my million questions and have helped me every step of the way in my rehab. Both are Professionals that I would recommend!

Recently my wife Gloria had a shoulder surgery by Dr Justin Griffin. The whole experience with him was EXCELLENT from the first interview up to the last after-surgery check up. He took the time to explain what it will be done, the expected healing time and the necessary therapy to recover the functionality of her shoulder. After opening her up for surgery he realized that he had to do a "reverse" procedure due to the fragility of Gloria's bones. He gave us a detailed explanation about it and provide several pictures from before and after. We consider ourselves very fortunate to have met Dr Griffin and his staff. His bedside manners are unparalleled. His courtesy made us 'feel at home' all the time. Incidentally, after the surgery we learned that he ranks all the way up nationwide in his specialty. Without any hesitation we suggest to every person facing shoulder surgery to get an appointment with Dr Griffin. That will be one of the best decisions that you will ever do, medically wise.

Instant 5-star review. My physical therapists were thrilled when I told them I was seeing him and their praise was warranted. Dr. Griffin was very attentive to my needs and was able to accurately explain the course of action for my issue. I was brought in with frozen shoulder and one option was surgery to fix it. He said he wanted to avoid that if we could. I agreed, and thanks to his help and care, we avoided surgery! He suggested I keep following my home treatments/exercise and we expect to be back to normal within a few weeks. Highly recommend!

What I liked the most was he explained my situation, the potential paths we could take and was not eager to go straight into surgery. He also does not treat you as if it is not your body part being discussed - in other words some doctors are either not interested in what you have to say about your own care or do not want to take the time to listen and discuss. Shoulder or knee (he is treating both for me) he is the Doc to see.

I had been having knee pain for quite a long time. I went in to see Dr. Griffin and initially he noted the plica was enlarged which was likely the culprit so we started small with injections. They worked for a bit but after 2 or 3 he recommended surgery to hopefully permanently solve the issue. I was hesitant but went with it and I in no way regret it. I am about 5-6 weeks post op and the pain I went in for is completely gone. I have a little residual pain from surgery but it is improving as I strengthen my leg. If you have any issues that Dr. Griffin treats, I cannot recommend him enough. Also his assistant Travis is fantastic as well. The only thing I will say is you should schedule appointments for the morning because they can get a little backed up through the day which results in some long waits in the afternoon. I am 60 years old and suffered a complete tear of my supraspinatus tendon. The injury left me sidelined from normal activities and exercise. Dr. Griffin performed surgery in the middle of November to reattach the tendon which required implanting anchors in my bone. Prior to the surgery I did some research and read nightmarish stories of slow recovery and intense pain. For me the post operation pain lasted only a few days. I was off pain medication after about 4 days and only had to take occasional Tylenol after that. I started physical therapy the first week in December and progressed at a very good pace. By the end of February I felt great and was performing normal daily activities without any hint of the injury. Now at the end of March I am getting back into regular exercise with weights and am nearly at 100% of where I was prior to my injury with zero pain. The shoulder feels fantastic. Dr. Griffin was terrific throughout the entire procedure. He took his time going over the MRI and showing me the extent of the injury. The radiologist who first commented on the MRI indicated that it was a partial tear. Dr. Griffin disagreed and determined that it was a full tear. Pictures he took during the surgery confirmed his determination. The surgery went off without a hitch and I was sent home within a couple of hours afterwards. Dr. Griffin followed up with me later that evening as well as the next day. At all appointments I had his full attention and he was never rushed. He fully addressed every question and concern.

Dr.Griffin is a one of a kind Dr. I have recently undergone a laterjet procedure on my right shoulder as well as an orthoscopic procedure on my left shoulder. The right side is more stable than before any injury as I had over 60 dislocations to my right side.I can’t share much experience with the left side as I just had I.T operated on but I expect I.T to have the same outcome. He was even nice and skilled enough to work with the lines of my tattoo on my left shoulder and you can’t really ask much more than that.A Dr. that listens and performs.

In October, I had pains in my right shoulder. I was unable to raise my arm, reach above my head and other normal, daily activities. I called Jordan Young Institute and was scheduled to see Dr. Griffin in December. After reviewing the x-rays, his diagnosis was a frozen shoulder. He gave me an injection and recommended therapy for 6 weeks. After therapy, Dr. Griffin, the therapists and I are very pleased with my progress without needing sugery. I am so thankful for Dr. Griffin and therapy.

Dr. Griffin is the consummate professional. I had suffered shoulder injuries from years on high speed boats in the Navy.. Dr. Griffin diagnosed the trouble and we decided on a logical approach. We tried non surgical procedures that helped with the symptoms but not the injury. I never had a surgery before & was apprehensive. Dr. Griffin and his staff took great care of me, repaired my shoulder, and followed up with me all the way through rehab. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Dr. Griffin.

I felt confident in Dr. Griffin to allow him to choose which of two options he felt was best after he opened my shoulder. From recovery after surgery through pt I had no pain. I recommend Dr. Griffin highly.

After having torn my rotator cuff, Dr. Griffin explained all the options for recovery. I decided upon surgery, even though I was quite nervous.. Dr. Griffin provided me with a patient handbook that contained everything I needed to know regarding my surgery. By the time I had the surgery in July, I was confident that everything would be okay, and it was. The surgery went off without a hitch and my recovery was relatively pain-free and quick. I am now back at work and planning a ski vacation!

I needed honest feedback of what my shoulder surgery would entail as well as what rehab was going to be like. Dr. Griffin gave me different types of scenarios my course of rehab could take depending on how my body reacts to the healing process. Dr. Griffin advised me that I had three small tears in the muscles surrounding the rotator cuff. His treatment protocol was to first see if strengthening the muscles in the shoulder and upper arm would eliminate the need for surgery. With his guidance and that of Atlantic Physical Therapy, I was able to do so. Aside from his genuine caring, his reputation as an orthopedic surgeon speaks for itself.

Dr. Griffin handled my surgery and recovery beautifully and I am back to full range of motion and activity. I had an extremely damaged shoulder that another doctor told me could be rehabbed with PT. I sought a 2nd opinion after several more dislocations and Dr. Griffin informed me that the shoulder would have to be repaired and after MRI he discovered the shoulder was damaged much more than we could have known. He informed me of options and walked us through every aspect of the surgery.
